Cedar Ring Mama

Taking My Cues From Mother Earth

Early Spring Collage

This weekend we searched in all the nooks and crannies of our corner of the earth for signs of spring.  First, we visited Cedar Ring Papa’s favorite spot…

…a small waterfall a few miles away from our house surrounded by a rocky ledge.  It always provides a soothing retreat.  The overhanging hemlock trees offer tiny treasures for little hands…

Now, with the sound of the falling water quieting our minds and centering us, we head to the magic cabin.  My in-laws hired some local Amish neighbors to build the shell of this structure on a piece of land we purchased together.

Slowly it is turning into a home-away-from-home for them- and a favorite hideaway for us!

Today we build a simple bridge across the spring-flooding creek…

then excitedly enter the woods to hunt for ramps.  Ramps are like little wild leeks- an oniony/garlicky wild spring food I look forward to all year.  (Recipes to follow.)

First we spot some bright red mushrooms, beautiful!

And after a bit of searching, we realize the ramps are EVERYWHERE!  There must be hundreds of tiny patches, just beginning to poke out from their leafy covers.  We brush aside the leaves…

and after thoroughly enjoying the true herald of spring eating for a few moments, cover them back up- because their “covers” keep them insulated from the last of winter’s cold retreat.

I always take time to admire and step inside my favorite ring of shagbark hickorys…

Until next time.
